Adult Formation
Welcome, and thank you for your interest in Adult Formation at St. James Episcopal Church. Below you’ll find a summary of our many educational opportunities for adults.
Please check back often as we will continue to add classes throughout the year!
Adult Forum: Going Off the Lectionary Grid
Typically we dive deeper into the lectionary readings. It provdes a structured way to explore the Bible over a three-year cycle. Each week a new speaker will pick a reading from the lectionary and talk about the various aspects surrounding the reading. We could explore languages, cultures, context, short films, etc. Join us as we explore how Scripture relates to our everyday life and find God in all things. Open mind and open ideas are always welcome as we learn together as a community of believers.
From May 31 to July 4, 2026, Basic A will be featured during Adult Forum. See below.
Day and Time: Sundays from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., except on Breakfast Sunday which is the second Sunday each month.
Location: Guild Hall

Education for Ministry (EfM)
Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year, small-group formation program based on study and practice in theological reflection. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has helped more than 120,000 participants discover and nurture their call to Christian service where they live, work, and play, including at St. James. EfM helps the faithful discover the Christian tradition, bringing it into conversation with their experiences of the world. EfM seminar groups develop theologically informed, reflective, and articulate seekers of God.
God calls us all to be active participants in ministry. As the Church, we are called to continue the ministry of Jesus. We are called to be the hands, heart, and incarnate body of Christ in our own place through worship, reflection, service to others, and by the proclamation of God’s Word to all people.
EfM offers an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to a Christian life.
We meet weekly through the academic year with registration for the ’26-’27 session to begin in June. If you are interested or have questions, please contact LoWaine Robison at or Deb Bagby. Registration costs, including fees is $372.75. Study books for the 4-year program and wide-angle are not included in the registration costs.
“And now, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.”
Time and Day: Mondays 6:30 – 9:00 pm
Location: Church Library

Basic A
Basic A (A stands for Anglican) is a course open to anyone – ages 12 and above, who would like to learn more about the Episcopal Church. It is especially good for people who are new to St. James and would like to know more about what we believe and what our history is. This course should make you able to discern if this is the church you should join and in which you should become an active part. This year the material is designed for not only the novice but the cradle Episcopalian. All are welcome!
Anyone who completes this course becomes eligible to be confirmed (or received)* in the Episcopal Church at St. James. *(If you are already confirmed in a church in the apostolic succession, you will be received instead of confirmed.)

Contemplative Prayer is considered a pathway of return; a means of opening up oneself to the intimacy of a relationship with God. Each meeting is self-contained, and there are no materials or experience required Come for the entire summer or drop in as you are able.

Graduate EfM
If you have finished the standard EfM course and want to continue in study and fellowship, please consider Graduate EfM. Each year we pick a course of study, usually using a series of taped lectures from The Teaching Company. We augment this with reading, discussion, guest speakers and field trips. The EfM pattern of learning, praying, and sharing treats and the joys and cares of our lives is continued in our group.
